Next Saturday 8th of October, a group of 6 Erasmus students : Armando Aibar, Claudia Liñán, Laura Peláez, Liliem Mohammed, Fahd Hamed, Mónica Barceló and 2 teachers: Tatiana Benet and Ana Carmona, will be heading for Braga ( Portugal) till the 14th of October.
This is our first learning/ teaching/ forming activity for us  and we are really excited about it.
During this week we have accomplished 3 tasks: we have made a video for the European day of Languages, we have interviwed a deaf student and her teacher (since the main topic of this visit is integration of students with special abilities) and we have designed a power point presentation about how these students receive support classes in our center. Likewise, we have recorded a video where we show the obstacles and disadvantages that people with physical disabilities or different abilities find in our city.
In our week in Braga, we will be hosted by Portuguese students ( some of them we ourselves hosted in Melilla last April ) and we will enjoy a wide variety of activities: sports, presentations, debates, IT workshops , activities together with SSN ( students with special needs ) and we will have the opportunity to show our in-between visits assignments.
Besides , we will be able to visit the magical city of Porto, Guimaraes and Braga.

Our partners are already here! We had been looking forward to this moment for so long  from the meeting in Caserta that  the months had gone too quickly

Months of preparations, programming, designing, mails, phone calls , adjusting time-tables, meetings and constant social networks checking. But at the end, we had succeeded  to fit all the programmed activities into the right schedule for teachers and students and what it is most important, the matching of the students seemed to go perfectly fine: students were happy with their mates and their communication was frequent and  fluent.

We wanted to make all kinds of Stage Arts the theme around which all the lectures and activities were to be designed and programmed: Drama, Music, Performances, Corporal expression , Dance would be the topics to reflect upon, integration and fight against discrimination in  the most vulnerable and underpriviledged social groups in our communities ; Art as the universal means of communicating anger, frustration, desperation, loneliness but also, solidarity, empathy and hope. And side by side with all kinds of artistic and cultural expressions, we have focused on Gastronomy as a deep, instinctive, genuine and most representative means of cultural identity for all the people.

Having all of this in mind, we have tried to contact lecturers, teachers and experts who work with students in risk of social exclusion and with special educative needs, students with migrant background , unaccompanied minors , refugees and they have taught us how music, dance, corporal expression, singing, performances , paintings and photographs are valuable and rich resources to raise our students´ awareness about the terrible situations of unfairness, intolerance, prejudice, hate, fear and ignorance surrounding us in our daily lives.  Moreover, we wanted to highlight our own students´ artistic capacities to find out through their vision, imagination and sensitiveness what they feel and think about the topics of our project: unprejudiced minds willing to collaborate to make a better society.

Here goes a summary of the main activities we carried out during that week:

MONDAY 24TH OF APRIL: On this day we had a welcome reception by the Management Board of our High School and after two power points presentations by the Spanish students participating in the project about our educative system
and social reality of Melilla, the key activites  of this day were the visit to the Temporary shelter of migrants in Melilla, where we could learn about European migration laws with refugees and asylum seekers and the opening of our Multicultural Photo Exhibition.

In the evening we enjoyed a Welcome dinner together.

TUESDAY 25TH OF APRIL: The key activity of this was the Multicultural International brunch which that had been designed several months ago. The Erasmus students, together with the students from the Support class for migrant students, showed us in the Assembly room the power point presentations about the typical gastronomy from their countries and cultures, also explaining the recipe which was to be elaborated afterwards. This activity was one of the most important one for our project since it gave these students with special educative needs the opportunity to fully participate in an European project, meeting new students and expressing their cultures, language and sensibility through this cooking workshop. Months ago, we had translated and prepared all the recipes from the different countries so we were ready to this complex, intense and highly organised activity. After 3 hours sharing recipes, knowledge, cooking skills and fun we could at last enjoy and try the delicious dishes the students prepared for us.

We also had very interesting lectures by Isabel Barbosa from Portugal and Francesco Bondanini, showing us the wonderful work done in the underpriviledged areas of Melilla by Kahina Project: social integration through Arts.

WEDNESDAY 26TH OF APRIL: Today we had many varied and exciting activities. We began with the lecture by Natalia Fernández, who , with a very dynamic, participative and challenging methodolgy showed us her work in the shelters for unaccompanied minors in Melilla. This musician and social worker has designed, organised and composed moving and spectacular shows where migrant girls have the opportunity to sing, rap, dance and perform as a powerful tool to express their deepest worries, frustrations, melancholy and longings and became visible and admired as examples of good practice in their proccess of integration as European citizens.

After this lecture/show where all the teachers and students took part singing and dancing, we went sightseeing to visit the temples, where our colleagues could appreciate and learn more about the multiculturality and diversity of religions that characterises Melilla. After the walking tour around churches, mosques, synagoges and Hindu temple , the local authorities gave us an official welcome reception in the Salón Dorado in the Town Hall. There were speeches, photos and interviews with the local media.

The last activity was a moving and interesting meeting with the photojournalist Antonio Ruiz, who shared with us his price-awarded and internationally admires photos about the life conditions and migration problems at the southern frontier of Melilla.We finished this intense day with a wondeful luch cooked and served by the cooking students and teachers of our center.

THURSDAY 27TH APRIL : The importance of this project for our center is reflected in the participation of many didactic departments of our High School in the carrying out and designing of the activities. To implement our convictions we succeeded in making  as many students we could participate in the activities during that week and the Tourism students were the main protagonists of this cultural visit to the old part of Melilla. These students prepared themselves with dedication and responsability to act as tour guides for the Erasmus teachers and students in their walking tour aroung all the beautiful corners of our city.

After this Tour, we had a long meeting to discuss several important points such as: timing and organization of the transntional visit to Portugal in October, the implication of every country in achieving a fluent and efficient co
mmunication through our private Facebook group and the dissemination of all the project´s results in the platform eTwinning and the blogs created to disseminate the project in our educative and local communities.

In the evening, we had an International Farewell party where we gave the attendance certificates and we shared the food that the host families had cooked for all of us. It was a moment for all the participants, students and families, because we gathered together and we had the opportunity to exchange conversations, remembrances and best wishes for the future of our common adventure.


In this last day students and teachers had separate activities; Erasmus teachers went to a day trip to Morocco and students stayed in Melilla to take part in a Music workshop with the musicians and teachers from the band Me
nhir and after this experience, they had sports activities together with some more students from our High School.

All these diverse and interactive activities were thought as the best way to know different cultures, that is, from cooking and tasting their gastronomy to listening to their songs , perform their dances and better understanding each human being´s need to be integrated in a peaceful and non-discriminatory society.

From the 24th to the 29th of April, we will host our partners in our city.  From last October 2016, when we came from the first international meeting in Caserta ( Italy) , we have been working  in the organization of this meeting, thrilled with the idea of being able to cope with all the programming management: tasks, details, responsabilities. It has been hard work since then but we have enjoyed every moment of the process:  informing our High School colleagues , designing the quesionnaires to find out the perfect matching for all the Erasmus students participating in the project, booking hotels,holding  several meeting with all the people involved in this adventure: management board, colleagues, families, local institutions and experts in migratory and social integration issues.

During this week, we want  to share with you experiences where the idea of a peaceful coexistence  of different religions, languages and cultures is always present.

You will fully understand the concept of interculturality tasting our recipes, listening to different music styles ,visiting beautiful Temples or walking aroung our Four-cultures city.

And you will share our motivation to give voice and visibility to these marginalized social groups which need us so much through different projects where  Art is so important to promote their inclusion as  European citizens.

This is week is very significant for us for several reasons: firstly, we want to give our students a wide, enriching and meaningful linguistic and vital experience in Europe, secondly, this Erasmus+ programme fits perfectly with our High School objetive to internalionalize our center and educative methods and lastly, these kind of experiences are a powerful tool to improve teachers´ linguistic skills and are the best way to go on strengthening and learning new educative approaches and making possible future working and personal projects.

First Transnational meeting at Caserta (Italy)

Our first international meeting without students was held in Caserta (Italy) from the 3rd to the 7th of October 2016. Teacher Amparo and me were looking forward to meeting those who were going to become Project colleagues and close friends during our adventure together.

We flew to Naples on Saturday on the 1st of October and slept over in the city to enjoy its magnificent Baroque churches and palaces and walk around its atmospheric and lively narrow streets. On Sunday , we took to train to Caserta where we had rented a nice apartment for the week.

On Monday 3rd of October, we headed for the Liceo Scientifico Antonio Díez in Caserta , where we met the rest of the teachers coming from Finland, Wales, Reunión y Portugal. We had a welcome reception from the authorities and each educative center participating in the project showed our school backgrounds in the Assembly Room to the rest of the international teams
In the afternoon , we visited the Royal Palace of Caserta.

On Tuesday ,we were taught through several presentations led by the Italian students the migrant drama in Campania ( figures, data and organizations which fight against migrants´explotaition by the different mafias) . We also got to know more about the integration and educative programmes to help these migrants in their vocational formation to try to find a job.

We had an afternoon workshop where we discussed the convenient dates for the following meetings:

On Wednesday 4th of October, we had several lectures and presentations:
Student presentation - physical disability interviews with Mr Giampiero Griffo from the National Library, former President of 'Disabled People International.

Scout Group presentation - They led on media awareness campaign of discrimination - they set up Ill Megafonio newspaper/magazine. They went to local marches to meet with the immigrants and organised Italian language courses for immigrants. Volunteer at Casa Rut house that welcomes victims of trafficking. Another house for migrant and homeless people - meals and clean clothes. Volunteer to help immigrants fill out documents and help with job searches or searching for houses. Woodcraft to teach skills. Now looking beyond Caserta. Mafia making everything difficult - 2008 massacre. Went to Sicily in 2013 where migrants land and 2016 to Calabria migrant camp. Then upon return to Caserta organised community workshops for students to integrate with migrants and hear their stories.
In an afternoon workshop, we agreed upon several issues:
  • Communication: agreed to use etwinning.
  • Logo Competition - by Dec 10th (Human Rights Day) sent to Spain.
  • Spain visit - photographs to be sent by 15th Feb (max 10 per school). Bring traditional food/drink. Cultural background PowerPoint. Traditional song.
  • Portugal visit - school integration for SEN presentation - what is meant by the term special needs? How are those students integrated? Deadline will be meeting in Portugal.
  • La Reunion - questionnaire. What are your pre-conceptions/stereotypes of La Reunion? Deadline a month before the visit? 28th February?
  • Wales – debate preparation - sustainable development goals linked to equality and diversity. Deadline by the meeting. Powerpoints? STRICT time limits!
  • Finland - equality challenge particular to your country - prepare a presentation. Cultural festival with music, dance and singing. Prepare a small piece by the meeting.

On Thursday 6th October, we developed our work sessions and workshops in San Nicola la Strada High School and the activities we carried out were:

Student presentation - history of the school . Built by the same architect and the same time as the palace. It was a convent. It holds the museum of the Bourbons palace.

Exchange Student presentation - students went to Sweden, Finland, Argentina, Costa Rica, Thailand, Canada (exchanges supported by local AFS).

Elena AFS (American Field Service) Intercultural Association - like American peace core? Ran through how AFS worked. Students and families will learn different competencies (personal, interpersonal, cultural and global).

Scout group - role play game about immigration. AMAZING! Story to remember, then application papers to fill out before meeting with the panel. Dependent on how well story remembered. Some granted immunity whilst others declined and given chance to appeal at tribunal.

Talk from the Representative of the European Commission in Caserta - 2014-2020 EU integration and education targets have been set so our project is perfectly aligned.
In the afternoon workshop we discussed the following issues:

ETwinning - upload this week’s resources asap. Notify of new posts etc. via Facebook if necessary.
Isabella Barbosa Pedagogy for Autonomy (PowerPoint to follow) - competences are developed not innate. Published paper in 2013 'Teaching for Autonomy: challenges and possibilities.' Also a book now available - 'Autonomy in Language Learning: Stories of Practices (on Kindle)

Friday  7th of October : we set off for a one day trip to Naples. Tour of the San Martino museum and a visit to the diversity section of the national library Naples and meeting with Mr Giampiero Griffo, former President of 'Disabled People International. Permanent member of the World Task Force for the defence of human rights and Bioethics. Now a member of the Italian Forum on diversity.

After this lecture, we had some free time to taste the typical and delicious Pizza Margherita in a local restaurant and we enjoyed our last night in Naples.

On Saturday 8th October, we took our flight to Melilla via Madrid.

After this preparatory meeting, we returned to Melilla with very clear ideas about all the arrangements, presentations and activities we could design for the next visit in Melilla.

Erasmus Spanish Team

Last 25th of January, we held an Erasmus meeting in our High School to present the activities we are planning to implement during the week from the 24th -28th of April.  We are designing mostly artistic and interactive activities related to Cooking, Photography and Music. The main objectives are to show how interculturality and diversity are best represented and accomplished in the collaborative work of students with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds .The results of these workshops will show how young generations enrich and lead their lives with understanding and respect of the diversity found in the globalised culture existing in our modern society. As you can see from the photo , a lot of teachers from our High School are willing to participate in this adventure since this Erasmus project is included in the Educative yearly programming of our High School.

There will also be examples of good practice of NGO´s which work hard to make a better world and the way we, as young volunteers, can contribute to improve the living conditions of the underpriviledged and those in risk of social exclusión if we actively participate as European citizen in those organizations and institutions. We hope their example will be followed by the younger generations.

Introducing our project

In this blog, the teachers and students participanting  in the project Leading Lights in Europe are going to inform the whole school community about the updated news and activities will be carrying out to implement the main objectives of this compelling and exciting new educative adventure. You will find information, ideas, activities and photos of all the transnational meetings and it will be a powerful tool to complement our other European blog: ,where you can follow and read about all the activities our partners are designing and doing in their schools to foster attitudes against xenophobia, inequalities and sexual, racial or social discrimination.
